Distinguished MVD Employee Badge, #5712, circa late 1940s.
The badge is early type, in silver-plated and gold-plated brass and enamels. Three-piece construction. Measures 42.1 mm from the top of the hilt to the tip of the sword blade. The oval back-plate is 32.7 x 26.3 mm. This early version features flat reverse in style similar to that of the Honored NKVD Badges and relatively small letters "MVD". Engraved serial number to the reverse in 5 o'clock position, in standard style of the period. Note that the number is extremely low for a Distinguished MVD badge and close to the NKVD serial number range. This badge is among the earliest MVD issues.
In excellent condition. The original red enamel is extremely well preserved on both the scroll and background under the sword - a very unusual case for the early type of Distinguished MVD badge. There are some tiny contact marks and minimal amount of rubbing to the surface of enamel resulting in the loss of luster, but no significant flaking or wear. The gold plating on the hilt of the sword and especially on the hammer & sickle emblem is very well preserved. The silver finish on the blade of the sword exhibits wear which adds character.
The silver finish is exceptionally well preserved on the reverse of the badge. The screw post is full length, approx.. 10 mm. Includes mint marked screw plate which is of the same vintage and correct for the badge, although not necessarily original to this particular piece. The screw plate is somewhat loose due to worn threads, but it attaches well to the lower part of the screw post. .
This badge replaced the Distinguished NKVD award in 1946, when the agency was split up into MVD and State Security. The State Security eventually adopted the "Honored" decoration of its own design (shield and sword), whereas the MVD carried on the tradition of the NKVD "Eggs". The numbering on the Honored MVD badges continued uninterrupted from the NKVD badges. Judging by the serial numbers observed to date, far fewer of the early type Honored MVD badges have been issued than of their NKVD counterparts.

В конце 1947 г. изменилось название знака «Заслуженный работник НКВД». Теперь это был знак «Заслуженный работник МВД», и аббревиатура «НКВД» была заменена на нём на «МВД». Получилось так, что он перестал быть наградой для чекистов и остался ведомственным почётным знаком в системе МВД. Для работников госбезопасности новый почётный знак был введён лишь в 1957 г., а до этого времени сотрудники МГБ–КГБ поощрялись денежными премиями, подарками и именным почётным оружием. В 60-х годах МВД временно преобразовывался в МООП, в этот период выдавался знак «Заслуженный работник МООП», затем после обратного преобразования в МВД опять стал выдаваться знак «Заслуженный работник МВД», причём нумерация на всей этой серии знаков МВД-МООП-МВД была единой.
